In this video, Matthew Hussey talks about dating dramas and the problem with awkward silences when you are dating.
A personal story from a subscriber
A woman met a guy for coffee and had to deal with that awkward silence moment. Feeling panicked, she blurted out about a woman in a revealing outfit “Oh my god, look at that woman, she looks like she belongs on a street corner.” The man’s response was “that’s my sister.”
Finding the Humor
In this story this woman was faced with an awkward silence, panicked, and made the situation even more uncomfortable. Rather than sticking around to see if anything was salvageable she just fled. It may have been that the woman wasn’t even his sister. Another question to ask would be why did he bring his sister on the date. She may have just dodged a bullet. The important thing, however, is that she can look back and laugh at this moment. She can learn from it and move on.
What to do with an awkward silence
Awkward silences happen and the best thing you can do is not panic. Just relax. Look around you, do some people watching, and when you are ready jump back in to the conversation. It takes two to have an interaction, so don’t feel too much pressure.
The woman in this story was once the type of person to over-analyze ever potential date and due to this had a relatively terrible love life. Upon opening herself up she found herself in this awkward situation. Rather than letting it keep her from taking more risks, she was able to find the humor in it. She was able to learn from it. Awkward silences happen, and when they do you simply need to relax and let them pass.
